Duration and intensity as perceptual cues for naïve listeners’ prominence and boundary perception

چکیده

I investigate the acoustic correlates of prosodic prominence and boundary, as they are perceived by naïve listeners, in spontaneous speech from American English (Buckeye corpus). Prosodic prominence and phrasing serve different functions in speech communication: prosodic phrase boundaries demarcate speech chunks that typically cohere semantically, while prominences encode focus and possibly also rhythmic structure. The acoustic correlates of prominence and phrase boundary are examined through measures of vowel duration and overall intensity of stressed vowels, to see how those measures correlate, individually or in combination, with naïve listeners’ perception of prominence and boundary. The results show that most stressed vowels are lengthened in preboundary words (i.e., those final in the prosodic phrase). Prosodic prominence is also cued by increased duration, but in combination with higher overall intensity for some vowels. The findings indicate differences in the acoustic properties of associated with prosodic prominence and prosodic boundary. Prosodic prominence is cued by a combination of spectral and/ or durational properties, while prosodic boundary is more consistently cued by durational cues, as perceived by naive listeners. These acoustic differences associated with perceived prominence and boundary suggest different mechanisms underlying their production. This claim finds support from consideration of the different functions that prominence and boundary play in encoding information structure, and in speech production planning.

Word segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour

Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Acoustic correlates of prosodic prominence for naïve listeners of American English

0. Introduction This study examines the acoustic correlates of prosodic prominence as perceived by a large number of native listeners of American English who are naïve to the phonetics and phonology of prosody. In English, as in other stress languages, speech utterances are chunked into smaller prosodic phrases, and within a prosodic phrase some words are assigned phrasal stress, which typicall...

Great Expectations – Introspective vs. Percept their Acoustic Correl

In order to gain knowledge about the interaction between topdown expectations of listeners concerning prosodic prominence and its acoustic correlates, two exploratory empirical studies were carried out. First, native and nonnative subjects rated prominences of speech read at normal and very fast —prosodically very different — speech. Later, these ratings were compared with introspective promine...

Naïve listeners’ perception of prominence and boundary in French spontaneous speech

Our main goal here is to explore the link between naïve listeners’ perception of prominences and boundaries in spontaneous speech and experts’ annotation of prosodic hierarchy and accentuation in French. We first present the design of our corpus, which consists in 133 utterances extracted from the Corpus of Interactional Data (CID). 73 naïve listeners judged prominences and boundaries using thr...
